Vinny Del Negro and the Chicago Bulls continue to battle amid speculation about the coach’s job security. John Kuester, meanwhile, hasn’t helped his chances of ensuring a long tenure with the Detroit Pistons. Del Negro and the Bulls look to end an eight-game road losing streak Thursday afternoon against the Pistons, who are trying to avoid nine straight defeats for the first time since 1994. Chicago (12-17) took some of the heat off Del Negro, posting its best scoring game of the season in a 104-95 win over Indiana on Tuesday night. It was the Bulls’ fourth win in six games, but rumors surrounding Del Negro’s future persist.

Prior to facing the Pacers, general manager Gar Forman said it was against the Bulls’ philosophy to comment on reports that Del Negro will be fired. Forman only said that all evaluations would be made internally. Chicago’s poor play away from the United Center is one of the reasons there may be merit behind the reports. The Bulls are a loss away from their first nine-game skid on the road since Jan. 7-Feb. 2, 2004.

The Houston Rockets’ trip to Dallas earlier this month ended with a controversial overtime win well after Dirk Nowitzki got an elbow full of teeth from Carl Landry, who subsequently endured six hours of surgery. The rest of the Rockets might prefer a trip to the dentist’s chair over reliving their November visit from the Mavericks. Houston looks to close the decade at the Toyota Center by avenging its worst home loss in more than 10 years Thursday night against Dallas.

The Rockets (19-13) had lost three straight by double digits to their Southwest Division rivals before heading to the American Airlines Center on Dec. 18, and although Kyle Lowry’s career-high 26 points and 10 assists lifted Houston to a 116-108 overtime victory, the game’s most notable moment came in the second quarter. That’s when Nowitzki’s drive into the lane was cut short by Landry, who was inadvertently hit in the mouth by the 2007 MVP’s elbow. Nowitzki received a deep laceration while Landry suffered five cracked or knocked out teeth, two of which were found embedded in Nowitzki’s elbow.

The San Antonio Spurs will conclude this decade with the league’s most regular-season wins. They’ve done a good job of adding to that total over the past three weeks. The Spurs look to win for the 10th time in 12 games and continue their dominance of the Miami Heat on Thursday at the AT&T Center. For the past 10 years, San Antonio (18-11) has been a model of excellence in the NBA. The Spurs have amassed an league-best 573 regular-season victories since Jan. 1, 2000, while also winning three championships.

San Antonio, which hasn’t missed the playoffs since 1997, got off to a bit of a slow start to this season, but has recently been one of the league’s hottest teams. After losing three straight Dec. 3-7 to drop to 9-9, the Spurs have gone 9-2 to charge into the thick of the Southwest Division race. San Antonio’s recent run of success means little to its hard-to-please coach. Although Popovich feels San Antonio has room for improvement, the team is undoubtedly playing excellent ball right now. The Spurs are averaging 105.9 points on 51.4 percent shooting in their last 11 games, while outrebounding opponents by an average of 5.7 in that span.
